Travertine and Bronze Decor: A Pairing for Warm Interiors

Travertine and bronze decor works because the two materials share a warm register but differ in surface. Travertine is pale and porous. Bronze is dark and smooth. Together, one takes the light and the other holds the shadow. On a table lamp, the pairing draws one clear shape against wood, linen or plaster.

Why do travertine and bronze work together?

Most pairings that last are built on one shared quality and one difference. Here, the shared quality is warmth. Our travertine runs from light beige to taupe. A dark bronze tone sits in the same warm family, only much deeper. The difference is everything else: light against dark, rough against smooth, open pores against a closed surface.

A note on words. On our lamps, the bronze is a finish: metal in a dark bronze tone. We describe it that way on our product pages, and we do the same here.

Two of our lamps are built on this pairing. Sillon sets a dark bronze dome over a tapered base of beige travertine. A slim metal stem runs through a groove cut into the front of the stone. Silex sets a wide dome of matte dark bronze over a cone of light beige travertine, with a small travertine cap at its center. On both, the light falls under the dome and onto the stone. The bronze stays dark. The travertine is what glows.

Where to use the pairing

Travertine and bronze read well at a distance, so give them a surface where they can be seen whole.

  • A sideboard with art above it. At 18.9 inches, Sillon holds its place under a painting.
  • A bookshelf. One strong shape among books breaks the rhythm of the spines.
  • A console in the entry. The pale stone catches the eye when you come in.
  • A dining table. Silex has no cord, so it can sit in the middle of the table for the evening.

The pairing also works beyond the lamp. A travertine tray with a dark metal object on it, or a bronze-toned frame above a stone surface, repeats the same idea at another scale. Keep it to one or two echoes in a room.

How to build a warm room around it

Travertine and bronze set the tone. The rest of the room can follow with a few materials.

  • Wood: oak or walnut, in a sideboard, shelving or a frame. Our photos set Sillon on both.
  • Linen: curtains, a cloth on the table, a cushion. Its weave echoes the texture of the stone.
  • Plaster or limewash walls: a matte, warm background that lets the lamp stand out.
  • One metal family: a common rule of thumb is to keep the other metals in the room close to the dark bronze, rather than mixing it with bright chrome.
  • A single stronger color: rust, olive or burgundy, in a small dose.

Before you choose, it helps to know the stone itself: our note on what travertine is covers its pores, colors and finishes. Then compare the shapes in our travertine table lamps.

Questions

Is the bronze on these lamps solid bronze?

Our product pages describe the shade and stem as metal with a dark bronze finish, and that is how we describe them here. On Silex, the finish is matte. On Sillon, it covers the dome, the stem and the lower knob. What you see is a dark bronze tone on metal, against the pale travertine.

Which is cordless, Sillon or Silex?

Silex. It runs on a 4,000 mAh battery: about 12 hours of light on a full charge, and about 6 hours to recharge. It uses a 3 W LED. Sillon is corded and plugs in, so it suits a fixed place near an outlet, such as a sideboard or a desk.

How do you care for travertine and bronze together?

Dust the travertine with a soft, dry brush or cloth. The stone is porous, so wipe spills quickly and avoid acidic cleaners. Wipe the metal with a dry cloth, and keep abrasive products away from the finish. That is all both materials need on a lamp that is rarely handled.
