To light a covered terrace without an outlet, set a cordless table lamp on the table, under the roof, and bring it back inside at the end of the evening. A rechargeable lamp gives low, warm light at the height of the conversation, with no extension cord across the floor.

Why a table lamp on the terrace?
Many terraces are lit by a single fixture on the wall or the ceiling. It lights the floor and the way out, but it rarely flatters a table of people. A lamp on the table puts the light where the evening happens: between the glasses, at the height of the faces.
Without an outlet, a plug-in lamp would need an extension cord across the floor. A cordless lamp needs nothing. Our cordless rechargeable table lamps charge indoors and go out for the evening.
The product page of Auren names this use. With no cord, it moves from the living room to the dining table, then out to the terrace. A covered table outdoors is listed among its places.

What to look for in a cordless outdoor table lamp?
A battery for the whole evening
Silex and Auren give about 12 hours of light on a full charge, from a 4,000 mAh battery and a 3 W LED. A full charge takes about 6 hours. Charge the lamp in the afternoon and it will see the evening through. For the battery over the years, read how long rechargeable table lamps last.
A shade that hides the source
Outside, at night, a bare light source dazzles. Both lamps hide it. Silex casts a warm amber light down from under its bronze dome, onto the stone. Auren spreads a warm golden light through its fabric drum.
A base of stone
Both lamps stand on stone: a tapered base of light beige travertine for Silex, a thick cylinder of natural stone for Auren. Set the lamp at the center of the table, away from the edge and from elbows.

Keep it under the roof
Neither lamp is sold as waterproof. A roof protects it from rain, but not always from blown drops, dew or a spilled glass. A few habits keep it in good condition.
- Set the lamp on the table, well under the roof.
- Bring it inside at the end of the evening, and never leave it out in the rain.
- Wipe any spill on the stone at once. Travertine is porous, and so is the stone of Auren.
- Avoid acidic cleaners on the travertine, and dust it with a soft, dry brush.
- Keep the fabric shade of Auren dry, and dust it with a soft brush.
- Recharge the lamp indoors, then take it out again the next evening.

Questions
Can I leave a cordless lamp outside overnight?
We advise against it. Silex and Auren are not sold as waterproof, and the night brings dew and changes of weather. Use the lamp on a covered table for the evening, then bring it back inside. It is also the moment to put it on charge for the next day.
How long will the lamp stay lit on the terrace?
About 12 hours on a full charge, for both Silex and Auren, from a 4,000 mAh battery and a 3 W LED. A full charge takes about 6 hours. Charge the lamp during the day, and it will last through a long summer evening with time to spare.
Is a cordless lamp bright enough for an outdoor table?
Bright enough for the mood, not for tasks. Our lamps give ambient light: a warm glow at the center of the table, close to what a large candle gives. To cook, to clear the table or to find the steps, keep the terrace light on as well.
