For a small room, choose a glass table lamp that is low and compact, about 11 to 14 inches tall, and leave clear surface around it. A lit glass shade lets the light through, so it reads lighter than an opaque shade. Lysa and New Works suit a nightstand or a narrow console; Zenith needs a deep sideboard.

Why glass suits a small room
In a small room, every object counts twice: once for the space it takes, and once for the space it seems to take. An opaque shade reads as a solid block. A glass shade, once lit, becomes part of the light. Opal and frosted glass glow through their whole surface. Clear glass lets the eye pass through to the wall behind.
The base matters too. On Lysa, the marble is polished: it reflects the room, and the glow of the shade above it. That reflection gives depth to a corner without adding anything to it. All three of our glass table lamps pair the glass with a darker base, which anchors the lamp to the eye.
How big should a lamp be in a small room?
A common rule of thumb is that the shade should not be wider than the surface it stands on, and that some clear space should remain beside the base for a book or a glass. Height follows the furniture: a low nightstand or a shelf calls for a low lamp.
| Lamp | Glass | Height | Width | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lysa | Frosted | 11.0 in (28 cm) | 9.1 in (23 cm) | Nightstand, console table, dresser |
| New Works | Opal | 13.8 in (35 cm) | 9.8 in (25 cm) | Side table, nightstand, narrow console table |
| Zenith | Clear | 19.7 in (50 cm) | 14.6 in (37 cm) | Sideboard, console table at least 16 in deep, large side table |
Measure your surface before you choose. The dimensions of all thirteen lamps are in our table lamp size guide.

Where to place a glass lamp in a small room
On a nightstand
Lysa is low and wide, 11.0 inches tall: it sits well on a nightstand as a bedside lamp. New Works, 13.8 inches tall with a 9.8-inch shade, also fits a nightstand. Both are plug-in lamps. Check that an outlet is within reach of the bed before you choose the side.
On a shelf or in a niche
In a small room, tables are the first surfaces to fill up. A shelf or a wall niche frees them. A low glass lamp among books gives a warm point of light, and leaves the floor and the tables clear.
On a narrow console in the entry
A narrow console table in a small entry takes New Works, which is sized for it. Zenith is not made for this place: it needs a console table at least 16 inches deep.

When is a glass lamp the wrong choice?
When the lamp is larger than the furniture. Zenith is the largest lamp in our collection, drawn to be seen from across the room. In a small room, keep it for a deep sideboard, where it has space around it. On a nightstand, it would crowd.
When the surface is very narrow. Our glass lamps are about 9 to 10 inches wide at the shade, and wider for Zenith. For the narrowest places, a slimmer lamp is the better answer: Colonne, in linen and fluted aluminum, is 5.1 inches wide.
When you need to read. Our lamps give ambient light. They set the mood of a small room; they do not replace a reading light.

Questions
What size table lamp suits a small bedroom?
A low one, in proportion to the nightstand. A common rule of thumb is a shade no wider than the table, with some free surface beside it. Lysa, 11.0 inches tall and 9.1 inches wide, and New Works, 13.8 inches tall with a 9.8-inch shade, both fit a nightstand.
Can one glass lamp light a small room on its own?
It can set the mood, not light the whole room. Our glass lamps give ambient light: a warm glow around the lamp, not bright light for reading or working. In a small room, one lamp is often enough for the evening. Add another light if you need to read.
Do glass table lamps need an outlet?
Yes. Lysa, New Works and Zenith are corded, plug-in lamps, meant for a fixed place near an outlet. In our collection, only Silex and Auren are cordless and rechargeable, and neither has a glass shade. Plan the outlet first, then the lamp.
